Artist's Statement

Safety and magic rarely intersect. As a female, I am often chastised for hiking alone. I have admittedly endured a few close calls – a bear in an isolated canyon, a dubious situation near the US-Mexico border, a few accidental trips down trails that weren't really trails. However, these solo moments I spend in nature are as important as the paint into which I dip my brushes, supplying me with beauty, wonder, strength, and empowerment.

Back in the studio, photographs never quite capture the enchantment or grandeur of my experience. My personal challenge as an artist is to create scenes that convey my perception of the world and transport the viewer to that magnificent moment made permanent. My goal is that the end result of my endeavor will inspire others to explore the raw beauty of nature and embolden other women to prove they can do wonderful, "dangerous" things, too.

I have always loved to showcase personality, bright color, and pattern in my style. As a child, my imagination was captured by the concept of pointillism, gazing in amazement at Seurat’s A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. As an adult, I became a collector of folk and outsider art, drawn to its pure expression, bright colors, and bold patterns and colors. Studying nature has shown me that pattern and repetition are quite natural concepts, occurring in abundance all around us. These interests and inclinations have shaped my painting style and use of color.

Biography

Teressa Lynn Jackson was born in Enid, Oklahoma, and grew up in the Louisville, Kentucky, suburb of New Albany, Indiana. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art from Louisville’s Bellarmine University in 1998. Following graduation, Ms. Jackson spent a summer studying Byzantine mosaics and frescoes in Rome, Ravenna, and Venice, Italy, with the State University of New York at New Paltz.

In the years following college graduation, Ms. Jackson’s art took a back seat as she pursued a successful career in the Louisville-area not-for-profit sector. Although she continued to paint, make mosaics, and design hooked wool rugs on an intermittent basis in her New Albany home, the majority of her creative energy was directed toward the organizations whose missions she was dedicated to advancing.

In fall 2016, 40-year-old Teressa sold her home and most of her possessions and spent a year traveling, connecting with beautiful places and experiences and using those adventures to inform and relaunch her lifelong need to create. During this time, she produced over 100 paintings and, remarkably, sold nearly all of them.

Ms. Jackson’s travels took her across most of the western United States, then to Belize, Mexico, and finally the Caribbean island of Saint-Martin. In late 2017, after missing Hurricane Irma’s destruction in Saint-Martin by just three days, Teressa and her husband Aaron Hodge flew to Tucson, Arizona, where they made their new home in the Sonoran Desert. In 2019, Aaron and Teressa relocated again to Tempe, Arizona. Ms. Jackson continues to work as a full-time painter and part-time marketing and fundraising consultant.

Ms. Jackson’s work has been shown in a number of juried and non-juried art exhibitions over the past twenty-five years, and she has been the recipient of several awards for her artwork.
