Sometimes a painting title comes from what’s in the painting. Sometimes it comes from where I was standing when I saw it.

The photo that inspired this miniature was taken in Tucson’s Pie Allen neighborhood, which has a name almost too good not to borrow.

The neighborhood takes its name from John Brackett “Pie” Allen, a Tucson pioneer, businessman, and former mayor who made a homestead claim in the area in the 1870s. And the “Pie”? Allen was known for selling dried-apple pies to soldiers, earning himself a nickname that Tucson is still using nearly 150 years later.

I’m not sure Pie Allen ever imagined his name would still be attached to a Tucson neighborhood more than a century later, much less to one of my tiny paintings. But when the sky puts on a show like this over Pie Allen, there really is only one title:

Pie and the Sky.

This original miniature painting was created with gouache paint on 140 lb. Legion hot pressed Stonehenge Black watercolor paper and measures 3×2”. It comes in a signed mat and frame that bring the overall size of the piece to 4.75x3.75”. It ships free.
